Hurricane Helene has caused considerable damage on its path through the U.S. Thousands have suffered injury, property loss, and power failure on top of the wreckage that must be cleared away. If you, or someone you know, in the New River Valley are in need of assistance, Virginia Tech has compiled a list of resources.

the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has issued a plea for clean-up buckets as they have depleted their stock in response to hurricane Helene.
Radford University has compiled a list of organizations that are in need of your donations and/or time
The Pulaski County Free Store (650 Giles Ave, Dublin)
- Collection Hours: Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 6:30-8 p.m.
- Looking for blankets, towels, water, individually packaged snacks, socks, tarps and more.
- Their Facebook page will post information about volunteer times to assist at the store as well.
Smyth County
- Smyth County Public Safety has opened a temporary donation center at the Old Wells Fargo Building at 102 East Main Street in Marion; daily hours will be posted to Facebook.
- Items needed include bottled water, shelf-stable food, cleaning supplies, gas cards, travel-sized toiletries, feminine hygiene products, tools such as shovels and rakes, toys for children, diapers, baby food and formula.
- Smyth County Public Safety asks that people please not bring clothing to donate.
Feeding Southwest Virginia
- They are asking for volunteers to help stock shelves and are accepting donations on their website.
- Additional volunteer opportunities are available in the Salem/Roanoke region as well as Abingdon region.
God’s Pit Crew

United Way of Southwest Virginia
- Donations can be made at their website.
- All funds donated are allocated to immediate relief efforts as well as long-term recovery initiatives.
Giles County
Local businesses and organizations seeking donations include:
- Simply Charming Boutique – items mentioned include: water, blankets, pillows, non-perishables, cleaning supplies, toiletries, shampoo/conditioner/body wash, baby supplies, dog/cat food, etc.
- Protectors N Paws – items mentioned include: bottled water, cleaning supplies, gloves, non-perishable food, bleach, mops, buckets, rakes, batteries, trash bags, shovels, bath towels, blankets, toiletries, baby supplies, etc.
- Rich Creek Fire Department is accepting hygiene products, trash bags, brooms, dish detergent, sponges, buckets and shovels.
- The Town of Pearisburg is accepting donations for countywide distribution at town hall (112 Tazewell St, Pearisburg, VA 24134).
- Pembroke Fire Department is accepting donations cleaning supplies; call 540-922-0252 for more information.
Volunteer Sign up: the county is coordinating disaster relief efforts and volunteers can sign up for notification of opportunities.
Clothing Bank of Radford
- Supply needs include: bed sheets, blankets, clothing, and small houseware items

Pulaski County

- When assessments are complete and ready for volunteers, Pulaski County Public Safety will coordinate volunteer efforts.
Virginia Department of Emergency Management
- A Volunteer/Donation Coordination Center is now open in Damascus, VA (744 N. Beaver Dam Ave., Damascus, VA 24236).
- They are accepting donations on-site and you can sign up as a volunteer to help in the cleanup process.
New River Valley First Responder Coalition Hurricane Relief and Supply Drive
Drop off locations include: Blacksburg Police Department, Virginia Tech police department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Christiansburg Police Department, Blacksburg Rescue Squad, Blacksburg Fire Department, Christiansburg Fire Department.
